Self-Guided Tour of the James M. Milne Library

Library Noise Gradient

To meet the needs of all students and employees the Milne Library works on a noise gradient. This means that depending on what space you are using, there are different expectations for talking, cell phone use, and overall noise. Please use the below guide to identify what space will match your study goals for the day.

  • First Floor: The first floor is a green zone, which means that conversations and talking are allowed, but cell phones should be set to silent.
  • Second Floor: The second floor is an orange zone, which means that only quiet conversation is permitted and cell phones should be set to silent.
  • Third Floor: The third floor is a red zone, which means that it is a silent study space, where no noise is permitted, and cell phones must be set to silent.
    • On this floor, there is also a brown zone, which is an absolute silent study space in room 326 (the oversize collection). No noise is permitted in this space, and your cell phone should be on silent or turned off.
  • Basement: The basement is a green zone, which means that conversations and talking are allowed, but cell phones should be set to silent.
  • Sub-basement: The sub-basement is an orange zone, which means that only quiet conversation is permitted and cell phones should be set to silent.
    • Please note: There is no cell phone service on this floor of the library.
