What is Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service through which the library attempts to obtain access to academic materials that are unavailable at Milne Library.

Anyone with an active SUNY Oneonta email account may obtain academic and intellectual materials from other libraries.  All others, including community borrowers and SUNY Oneonta alumni, should request ILL service through their local public libraries.

What can be requested on ILL?

The library is most successful in obtaining books and scanned copies of periodical articles or book chapters, and will try to borrow any item for which there is adequate bibliographic information. However, often libraries will NOT lend the following:

  • Very new books
  • Dissertations
  • Reference materials
  • Audiovisual materials
  • Whole periodical issues
  • Rare or fragile items

The library does not request materials in order to put them on reserve and does not request textbooks or other required reading for classes.

You may request an item that is checked out or otherwise unavailable. Please put that it is unavailable in the NOTES field of your request.

An individual can have twenty active requests at one time. As these are completed (articles received or books returned), new requests can be submitted.

Borrower’s Responsibilities

Patrons’ respect of materials from lending libraries and adherence to any restrictions placed on them are crucial to maintaining Milne Library’s borrowing privileges with other libraries. Patrons are financially responsible for any damage to or loss of interlibrary loan items. Any damage should be reported immediately to the ILL Office or the Circulation Desk; patrons should not attempt to repair items themselves.
