October 19-25 is the 10th annual international Open Access Week, when scholars and researchers around the world celebrate, interrogate, and share ideas about Open Access (OA) principles and practices. The goal of OA is “the free, immediate, online availability of research articles coupled with the rights to use these articles fully in the digital environment” (SPARC) so students and scholars all over the world can share and build on each other’s knowledge. This year’s OA Week theme is "Open with Purpose: Taking Action to Build Structural Equity and Inclusion."

Here at SUNY Oneonta, we have a lot to celebrate about advancing OA this year. We have a new campus Open Access Policy and a stake in the SUNY Open Access Repository, which officially launches this week and where Oneonta authors can openly share their scholarly and creative works. Plus, we have a thriving Open Educational Resources (OER) Initiative that lowers barriers and costs for SUNY Oneonta students. As the first Scholarly Communications Librarian at James M. Milne Library, I am thrilled to be a part of the momentum toward open access at our college.

During OA Week, there are lots of opportunities to learn more about open scholarly practices at our campus and beyond:

WEDNESDAY, October 21, 3-4 PM.

Faculty and students at SUNY Oneonta are using open methods to make their scholarship and course materials more inclusive and accessible on campus and beyond. What are they up to?

In a virtual discussion panel, SUNY Oneonta instructors and students will share their stories about how they are using open access publishing to diversify their readership, open educational materials (OER) to lower costs and barriers for students, and open pedagogy to invite students into the creation process. The panelists are Gregory Fulkerson (Sociology faculty), Kathryn Kilichowski (Political Science alum), Kristen Roosa (Biology faculty), and Nicole Waid (Secondary Education faculty). Hope to see you there!

  • Co-hosted by SUNY Oneonta’s Milne Library; Faculty Center; and Teaching, Learning & Technology Center (TLTC)

THURSDAY, October 22, 8:30-10 AM

The TLTC's weekly Teaching Breakfast is an informal gathering where faculty can share and learn from each other about issues of teaching and learning. For the Open Access Week, the theme of the week will be Open Access and OER. Consider it a chance to come as you are, ask questions, share your experiences or concerns, and continue the conversation. It's a drop-in meeting, so come (and go) as your schedule allows.
