Ethical Considerations: AI, Intellectual Property, Your Data and Privacy

When talking about AI, there are many considerations surrounding intellectual property, data, and privacy.

Two key considerations include:

  1. Other's intellectual property: Most generative chatbots will "chat" with you, providing answers to questions that you pose to the chatbot, but not giving credit to the source that it is relying on for that answer. As is discussed within this guide, chatbots are LLMs, meaning that they rely on large amounts of untagged data to provide you with an "answer" to a question. But in some cases, the chatbots do not have the ability or will not provide you with a citation for where the chatbot retrieved the answer from. Therefore, the person who created the source that the chatbot is relying on, is not receiving the credit for their own intellectual property. This could lead to various conversations about academic integrity and why we cite our sources, but also allows us to talk about your intellectual property and privacy.
  2. Your intellectual property and privacy: When you sign into a new app (TikTok, Instagram, etc.) or chatbot (ChatGPT, Gemini, etc.) you will be asked to "agree to the terms of service" before you can access the app or chatbot. Do you remember selecting "accept and continue" on your TikTok account, or the last chatbot you signed into? If you remember this, did you spend the time to read and understand the terms of service? Who owns the data/ information that you are providing to the app or chatbot? As discussed above, chatbots are built on large amounts of data and continue to "learn" through use by people like you and me. This means that these chatbots rely on the data you provide them. Be mindful of this data, intellectual property, and your own digital privacy.

Intellectual property and privacy is a large ethical concern surrounding AI and it could be a great conversation starter with students surrounding AI.

Environmental Sustainability Concerns with AI

There has recently been much discussion about the environmental impacts of AI chatbots. Below are just a few of the articles outlining stark realities of the environmental considerations surrounding use of AI chatbots.

There are countless other information sources on the environmental impacts of AI. This could be a great conversation to have in class especially in the context sustainability being one of SUNY Oneonta's core values (Sustainability, n.d.)!

Artists and Artist Rights

As there are many considerations surrounding intellectual property and academic integrity, there are also many considerations for AI surrounding copyright and artist rights. Below is a brief list of articles which outline key considerations about artist rights and the use of AI.

Artist rights and AI is a topic that students are considering and thinking about, this could lead to great conversations in a classroom setting.

Human Labor

There have recently been many articles released which explore the impact of AI technology on human labor around the globe. Many large issues encompassed within one single quote, published in the Noēma Magazine outlines, "so-called AI systems are fueled by millions of underpaid workers around the world, performing repetitive tasks under precarious labor conditions" (Williams, Miceli, and Gebru, October 13, 2022, para. 8).

Further research on the impact of AI on human labor can be found below:

We encourage you to continue researching and considering the impact of AI on human labor.
