Milne Library is proud of several productive partnerships with faculty and staff from the departments of Theatre, Art, and Sociology that have brought inspiration, beauty, and food for thought into our library spaces and resources this semester. Each of these projects support the library's mission to be an inviting and stimulating intellectual center on campus.

#TheatreAppreciation Textbook

Published in December 2022, #TheatreAppreciation is an open access textbook for introductory level lecture classes such as Theatre Appreciation and Introduction to Theatre. It provides insight about the art and craft of theatre, a brief exploration of theatre history, discussion about the styles and forms of theatre, and an overview of professions in the field. As stated in the conversational style used throughout the student-friendly textbook:

"[The textbook] was conceived to serve students who are new to theatre and in need of learning the basics so that they can decide for themselves whether to pursue further research in the field by way of other classes and other textbooks… or not."

The book is edited by Kiara Pipino (Theatre) with contributions from multiple SUNY Oneonta Theatre faculty members as well as practitioners and faculty from institutions across the US. It was created with support from the Open Educational Resources (OER) Initiative on the SUNY Oneonta campus. We chose to publish the book in the SUNY Create Pressbooks platform, which allows our faculty to create low-cost, openly licensed, digitally accessible teaching materials for our students.

Lines in Rendering: A Library-based Open Studio Installation

From November 8 through December 16, 2022, Milne Library hosted Lines in Rendering: Open Studio & Exhibition. This open studio installation of visiting faculty member Qiaoyun Zhou's art and studio materials was open to the public throughout each week, and weekly demonstrations of artistic process were offered by request to the artist.

The installation was co-organized by the Sociology department and Lori Wienke of Milne Library.

Rotating Art Gallery & Theatre Displays

The library's new Research & Creative Works Digital Display has been particularly popular with the Theatre department and Art Galleries. This semester we have featured four rotating digital exhibits on theatre and art topics on our large screen display. Students studying in our main floor spaces have enjoyed slideshows depicting last spring's Theatre productions as well as several Art Gallery exhibits. Partnering groups have the opportunity to share brochures, posters, or other promotional or informational materials for students on the desk space below the display.

The purpose of the library’s Research & Creative Works Digital Display is to extend the audience of on-campus scholarly and creative activities and events as well as bring campus-supported research, humanities, and art into view for students and other visitors to the library. The display was funded in 2021 by the Provost's Office Faculty Fellows program and is maintained by Milne Library.
