Black History Month Display

February is Black History Month. This month honors the history, achievements, culture, and lives of all Black people throughout U.S. history. The theme of this year's Black History Month is African Americans and the Arts. The steps toward the celebration and federal acknowledgement of Black History Month begun in the late twentieth century. In 1915, historian Carter G. Woodson co-founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History to provide information about the accomplishments of Black people and create a space for Black intellectuals. This group formed “Negro History Week” in 1924 to formally recognize and celebrate the contributions of African Americans to U.S. history. In 1976, U.S. President Gerald Ford officially declared that February would be Black History Month to recognize and honor the accomplishments of Black Americans. 

Milne Library's book displays incorporate a number of different items from our collection including books, art books, ebooks, documentaries, CDs, and DVDs to highlight the history and artistic contributions of Black Americans.
