Cooperstown Graduate Program Research Guide: Finding Books

Requesting books

Below you will find the processes for requesting books from Milne Library.  If a book you want isn't available from Milne, follow the steps for Requesting a book from another SUNY.  Finally, if a book isn't available from another SUNY, the last resort would be to follow the steps at the end to request it through interlibrary loan.   Please try to plan ahead as much as possible, since during this time, many libraries are not lending their books.

Please also keep in mind that required readings for courses cannot be borrowed through resource sharing or interlibrary loan.

Requesting a book from Milne Library

Requesting a book from Milne Library:

  1. From the Library's homepage, do a search using the Simple Search or Advanced Search.
  2. In the results list, you can use the filters to the left to narrow your search.  To limit to materials available in Milne Library, under Availability, click "Held by Library," and to limit to print books, under Resource Type click "Books."
  3. At the top of the results list you'll notice a yellow bar that says "Sign in to get complete results and to request items."  Click on the Sign In icon and choose Oneonta login.
  4. Once you've found a book you'd like to request, clicking on it will allow you to see more information as well as click the "Request for remote check-out".  Click this request button and in the comment section make sure to type CGP.  This will ensure that the book is sent to you in Cooperstown.  If you forget to put CGP in the comment box, simply email libcir@oneonta.edu to our Circulation team know and they will re-route the book to you (otherwise it will just be waiting at the circulation desk in Milne Library).  A green box will appear saying that your request was successfully placed.
  5. Your requested book will be sent by campus mail to your mailbox at CGP.  All deliveries to Cooperstown Graduate Program will be on Tuesdays and Fridays.  It will come in a jiffy bag (padded envelope).  Please open carefully so that you can recycle the jiffy bag in the designated bin (which can then be used when you return the book).  Keep the mailing label with the book, as you'll need that when you return the book.
  6. You can return your books directly to Milne Library in any of the book drops, or simply reuse one of the jiffy bags, attach the mailing label, and place in the designated bin at CGP.
  7. Books will be due February 1st, 2021.  However, please return the book when you're done so others can use it.

Requesting a book from another SUNY library

Requesting a book from another SUNY library:

If Milne Library doesn't have access to a book you need, you may be able to borrow the book from another SUNY through Resource Sharing.  Most SUNYs offer a 16 week loan.

  1. From the Library's homepage, go to Advanced Search.  At the top, choose SUNY Catalog.  This will allow you to search across all SUNYs who are currently lending their books.
  2. You can limit the material type to books on the right before you even start the search.
  3. Note that electronic books cannot be borrowed.
  4. Once you've found a book you'd like to request, clicking on it will allow you to see more information.  Under "How to get it," click on Resource sharing.   The request form will automatically populate.  Make sure in the comments section to type CGP, as this will ensure the book is mailed to your mailbox at CGP.
  5. A green box will appear that tells you your request was sent successfully.
  6. Your requested book will be sent by campus mail to your mailbox at CGP.  All deliveries to Cooperstown Graduate Program will be on Tuesdays and Fridays.  It will come to your mailbox in a jiffy bag (padded envelope).  Please open carefully so that you can recycle the jiffy bag in the designated bin (which can then be used when you return the book).  Keep the mailing label with the book, as you'll need that when you return the book.
  7. Make sure to note the due date and return the book prior to that date by reusing on of the jiffy bags, attaching the accompanying mailing label, and placing in the designated bin at CGP.

Borrowing from other libraries

Borrowing from other libraries

If your book isn't available from Milne Library nor another SUNY Library, you can request it through interlibrary loan.  Check out our Guide to Interlibrary Loan.  Some things to keep in mind:

  • When looking for books, check out what is available from other SUNYs first by going to Advanced Search and choosing SUNY Catalog at the top.  After you do your search, make sure to sign in.  Click on the title of the book you want, and under "How to Get It" click Resource Sharing.  The information about the book will autopopulate.  Scroll down and in the "Comments" section make sure to type in CGP so that we know to send it to you in Cooperstown (otherwise it will be waiting for you at Milne's Circulation Desk).  Then click Send Request.  A green box will appear that says your request has been successful.  Most SUNY's allow a 16-week loan!
  • If the book you're looking for isn't available from the SUNY Catalog, you can use WorldCat to search libraries across the country.  After you click on the title you want, scroll down and click Request via interlibrary loan.  This will either take you to the resource sharing link (if it is available from a SUNY), or to the Illiad login, where, after you log in, the information will autopopulate.  Note: when you first set up your Illiad account, make sure to choose Cooperstown Graduate Program as your department.  Make sure to note the due date, as it will likely be much shorter than borrowing from Milne or another SUNY.
