Department of Business

The Department of Business is accredited by AACSB International--The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Of the approximately 16,000 business schools in the world, just five percent have achieved this designation, indicating a highly qualified faculty, excellent curriculum, and top outcomes for graduates. We now have 50 years of experience preparing students for careers and entry into graduate or professional schools. Students may choose from two undergraduate business majors: Business Administration and Professional Accounting. Business program graduates continue to be much in demand by employers around the globe.

In concert with the overall mission of SUNY Oneonta, we encourage student intellectual growth through educational experiences embedded in our curricular and co-curricular programing. Business faculty and staff are highly focused on student success. Our national and internationally renowned business faculty are dedicated to bringing real-life experiences into the classroom to enhance the learning outcomes of the students. They have established high expectations for student learning and provide the support needed to succeed.

A range of activities encourages learners to understand their roles and the place of good business practices in supporting long-term societal improvement while providing graduates with the tools to engage in life-long learning and meaningful, fulfilling work. We prepare students not just for their first step into the world of work, but for long-term business careers and leadership roles, informed decision-making, creative problem-solving, and sound ethical judgment.

First and second-year students learn in moderate-sized classes that include economics and a variety of other liberal arts and science courses, and they spend their final two years in smaller upper-division classes utilizing advanced technology. All faculty members are full-time and possess terminal degrees in their fields of teaching. In addition, the faculty enrich academic learning with extensive industry, government, consulting, and international experience. Our programs are a distinctive infusion of accounting, finance, management, marketing, management information systems, production management and operations research, business law, and professional ethics.

Many exciting co-curricular experiences exist campus-wide, including participation in the performing arts, sustainability-related activities, and involvement in student leadership. Business students can also pursue their interests through clubs organized around accounting, entrepreneurship, finance, management, and marketing.

We offer numerous practical experiences and opportunities to participate in team projects. Experiential learning includes a robust internship program and a student-managed investment portfolio. Department of Business holds membership in the SAP University Alliance providing students with an opportunity to learn various business processes and their integration with SAP, a leading enterprise resource planning software, integrated into the business curriculum. The Department of Business holds the Bloomberg Experiential Learning Partner designation with students achieving a level of Bloomberg Market Concepts certifications that is among the highest globally.

We recognize and reward academic achievement. The Department hosts a chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma, the International Honor Society Recognizing Business Excellence. Our Beta Gamma Sigma chapter has achieved "Highest Honors" status for several consecutive years. Department honors are awarded to outstanding graduates. A growing number of scholarship awards are made each year from endowed scholarship funds reserved for top business students. First-year students and transfer students with excellent academic records may qualify for one of many academic merit scholarships awarded by SUNY Oneonta.

Quality learning experiences are the symbol of our community at SUNY Oneonta. I invite you to explore our website and contact us if you want more information or have questions.
